Sciota Townhall

A couple of weeks ago Northfield Construction Company was the successful bidder on a new township hall for Sciota Township. Contract documents were completed and we are underway with the construction. We installed the underground utilities for the building last week and took advantage of the beautiful fall weather to install the concrete floor this week.

We will try to install all of the exterior concrete and site work over the next 10 days, then move on to the actual construction of the building The area off County road 47 in Dakota County north of Northfield is a nice level site, making it easy for us to access and service the project.

Halloween photos

The Northfield website folks at Northfield.org have posted photos of the Northfield Construction Company Halloween decoration. As I drive about town I am seeing all sorts of displays for the Halloween decoration contest.....it's fun to see the community efforts for a fall event. Again, thanks to Jodi at Northfield Construction for her work creating our entry!

Chamber of Commerce Forum

This morning I attended a Northfield Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting. The topic for today was “Business Development in the Northfield Area” and the forum was held in the meeting room of the new Community National Bank. There was a good crowd of area business people and others interested in business growth.

Robert Bierman opened the meeting and introduced Brian O’Connel. Brian is the Community Development Director for the City of Northfield.
He gave an overview of the status of various projects either underway or being proposed. This included the Riverfront redevelopment project, Village on the Cannon, Millstream Commons, Oil Can Henry’s, and other projects. If you are a regular reader of this blog you will see that we have constructed several of these projects.

Brian informed us that the city was in the process of identifying a new piece of property to be included in Northfield’s JOBZ area. This is the state sponsored Job Opportunity Building Zone that eliminates most taxes on projects that produce jobs. The site is being identified so that Speechgear can move into the building. Speechgear is a ‘home grown’ business that develops speech-computer inferface capability.

Brian also talked about the various annexation agreements the Northfield has with the four surrounding Townships. These agreements indicate in what areas land is available to annex to Northfield for developments. We face a shortage of commercial and industrial land that is a concern of many business owners. Northfield Construction has constructed businesses that moved to adjoining communities because there was no land available. No city likes to loose a business.

Halloween decorations

Northfield Construction is participating in the Chamber of Commerce Halloween figure contest. Long-time employee Jodi worked hard to create this construction worker.

She did a great job on it. The figure has a handsaw in his hand and is sawing a board. The old overalls and gloves give it a nice look. From what I’ve seen, this one is the best looking figure around…..Thank you Jodi!!!

A Playground for Everyone in Northfield

I was invited to attend the dedication of Northfield’s accessible playground yesterday….what a great event it was. Ellen and I joined many other people from the community to officially open this playground on the east side of town.

We ran into several city council members, including Dixon Bond and Arnie Nelson, shown here with Ellen.

Arnie and I, being involved in the construction industry for decades, were both impressed with the soft, rubber base under much of the equipment. It is firm enough to walk or wheel on, but is soft enough to cushion a fall.

Mayor Lee Lansing spoke to the crowd about the way this accessible park started as an idea from a few individuals, but turned into a collaborative effort between service clubs, hundreds of area residents, and city staff.

The ribbon was cut and the park was officially opened for everyone to use.

It truly was wonderful to see special needs children present and know that they could indeed use the playground on their own. One mother spoke about how difficult it was to take her two boys to a city playground, and to have her handicapped child only be able to watch the children play. Now, with this beautiful new accessible park, that child can participate in activities with all other children.
